WevHez and the Hostage Situations

Do you see the souls in the background trying to strangle the police officers?
Imagine this. You're planning a trip to Philippines. There's no travel advisory against traveling over to Manila. And thus, you and your family fly over on a guided tour. It's supposed to be a happy occasion when suddenly a 'loaded' man forces himself on your tour bus.
Congratulations, you have just been taken hostage by a mental person who wants justice done to his life and career.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the sane thing to do for you to get what you want is to take hostages and make demands.
When they give you what you want, you can happily walk out the door and carry on with life as if nothing happened.
And they say us children don't know better.

And so you wait oh so impatiently while trembling in fear for the rescue team to bus into the bus at any time to save your skin. This wait turns into a 12 hour long struggle. Apparently, the rescue team is JUST AS FAIL AS (if not more) your kidnapper. Unfortunately for you, you don't really get to see what's happening outside. And if you did, you'd plan an escape plan by yourself too.
But the madman decides to let some people leave the bus... apparently you're not so lucky.
What's the point of aiming at the bus? You're supposed to BUST IN.
One fellow tourist gets tired and leans his head on the window. Suddenly the window breaks and he lies on the floor with a broken skull. Things start to get worse and you feel like just running out of the bus. Yet, something stops you from doing so. Yes, the loaded madman is still in there, clearly agitated at the fact that one of his frags have been KS-ed. And as he watches TV and sees his brother taken hostage by the police, a few people start leaving the mortal coil.
(Both sides kill more hostages with the madman accidentally shooting onlookers who were allowed to get so close to the danger zone)

You pray hard and thank goodness that none of your loved ones have left you behind yet. But you look around, still cowering in fear. There are not many people left to kill. You realize the chances of you or your loved ones being next are high.
Your bus driver somehow manages to bail out of the danger zone (leaving all of you for dead) and goes out allegedly chanting "EUREKA!" "EVERYONE IN THERE IS DEAD".
You think to yourself. "WTF! Now I'm REALLY DEAD!"

You watch the police and their countless FAIL attempts at getting into the bus, even accidentally dropping a hammer in the bus. More drama ensues and nothing but more fear creeps up into your bloodstream, threatening to drive you insane. Then he suddenly falls to the ground.. DEAD.
God bless the sniper. You're finally slowly but surely rescued from the mess, with trauma and grief that might scar your life forever. (And cause your home country to get angry at the FAIL Philippines)
This guy died trying. But at least he tried.
Apparently the Manila incident has led people to believe that hostage situations can become a trend. Just yesterday night while I was snoozing away, this guy from the other side of the world decided to save the world by taking 3 hostages in the Discovery Channel HQ.
His demands?
Save the world! Put save environment shows on PRIMETIME (Sound grand? Wait till you hear the next one)
Stop human reproduction! USE RUBBER and MORE. (Tell our PM that and he'd have him arrested immediately)

And he has a whole long list of demands. One would think that a logically sane kidnapper would have a hostage for each demand. But he only had 3.
Something tells me he won't be getting out of this alive.
O wait. He's dead.
And how long was the rescue mission? Less than 4 hours. That's 1/3 of the Philippines FAIL, and with ZERO hostages dead.

Fortunately things like these don't happen locally. But I may be speaking too soon.
For all you know, maybe tomorrow there's somebody taking hostages demanding for their share of $9000 from the NS award policy.

Hi Wei Hao, well written article!

I was watching this episode live on BBC that night after receivng a text from a friend who is a cable tv fan.

This show really wayang to me, what the police trying to do in front of the whole world?

First they throw in the axe trying to break the glass, then use a rope tie the front of the bus door. I thgt they trying to blow up the door.

Wouldn't these actions antagonize the hijacker?

I say better to travel free and easy, not in groups in future.

The likely hood of being robbed or hijack will be lesser.
Travel with at least a partner and read up abt the place in advance.

I do believe in safety in numbers. Also, if you're in a place where you are unfamiliar with, it's always better to have a trusted guide to bring you around.
Things like hijacks and robberies do happen. But we must not let them prevent us from having the kind of fun we're supposed to have.
